A homeowner's crawlspace was plagued by a critical design flaw: it was completely open to an exterior porch, allowing for direct air exchange between the crawlspace and the outside environment. This unobstructed airflow led to a host of problems, including high humidity levels, mold growth, and unpleasant odors within the crawlspace. As a result, these issues weren't contained beneath the home - the mold and smells were also permeating up into the living spaces, compromising indoor air quality and creating an unhealthy environment for the family. Furthermore, the uncontrolled airflow was also causing terrible energy efficiency, with the home's heating and cooling systems struggling to maintain a comfortable temperature, leading to skyrocketing utility bills.
We tackled the crawlspace issues by building an 18-foot wide waterproof and insulated wall to create a thermal barrier between the crawlspace and the open porch area, effectively sealing off the crawlspace from the outside environment. A custom-built door was then installed to provide secure access to the crawlspace from the porch, ensuring a weather-tight seal when closed. To further protect the crawlspace, we installed an insulated encapsulation system, paired with a dedicated dehumidifier to maintain optimal humidity levels and prevent future mold growth, resulting in improved indoor air quality, reduced energy bills, and a healthier living space.
